Gulf of ghosts

Lubok Antu, Sri Aman.

‘Lubok Antu’ literally translates to ‘Gulf of Ghosts’. History says that the Iban communities were always at war with each other, resulting in dead bodies being thrown and swept away into the river where they gathered in the gulf of the Batang Ai river. Nobody knew what to do with all the corpses that were stuck here and so the locals assumed the area was haunted and named it Lubok Antu.

I didn’t mean for the pictures to appear this way. As you can see, the open field with the mountainous background was an amazing sight to see. But as we exited this little district of Sri Aman which is also by the border of Indonesia, dark clouds began to loom over us, giving it an eerie view.
